Editor Notes:

The Phoebe was registered out of Charleston and the Prudent, which was misidentified in the manifest as "Prudence," was out of Newport. All of the Africans aboard the slave ships Phoebe and Prudent were taken to the Lazaretto, a quarantine station at the mouth of the Schuylkill River, as a precaution against Yellow Fever. Some required hospital care and six died while under hospitalization and are presumed buried in the hospital's burial ground.

One African died a few months later at the Philadelphia Almshouse and the fate of one is still unknown. The remaining 127 were taken under the care of the Abolition Society of Pennsylvania, which assigned the surname "Ganges" to all. As they had no means of support or survival in a foreign land, the society arranged indentures for each in Philadelphia and the neighboring counties of Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and York, in Pennsylvania, and the counties of Burlington and Gloucester in New Jersey.

Researcher Michael Kearney maintains an extremely detailed and well-researched website devoted to the history of the rescue and settlement of the Ganges families in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The Ganges Families History Project is at: https://thegangesfamilies.com/.

Editor's Notes:

Washington Jackson was a Philadelphia merchant with a trading company based in New Orleans, and who, along with his partner Donelson Caffery, owned sugar plantations in Louisiana. The enslaved woman identified as "Rhodea" above, was Rhoda, who, while enslaved on Jackson's sugar plantation in Louisiana was raped repeatedly by the plantation co-owner Caffery, who fathered three children by her: William, James and Lucy. When Caffery became engaged to marry, Rhoda and her children had to be removed from the plantation to avoid scandal. Caffery purchases all four from Jackson in 1816 for $1,000, with the stipulation that Jackson would remove them to Philadelphia. There, they were to gain their freedom after six months, per Pennsylvania law.

But one year later, Caffery had Rhoda and her children taken to a plantation owned by a family friend, Thomas Martin, in Nashville where, ostensibly, Rhoda would work as a free Black and her children would be taught trades. All had, before their removal to Nashville, spent more than six months in Pennsylvania and were legally free Blacks. Rhoda, in the meantime, had additional children fathered by white men on the Nashville plantation, including one, Emeline, born in 1822.

Thomas Martin died intestate in 1835, a court awarded ownership of Emeline to Martin's daughter Eliza, and ownership of Rhoda and all her other children to Martin's son William. Caffery had died previously and Jackson was by now managing his trading business in New Orleans. No white persons remained to testify that Rhoda and her children were actually free.

Eliza Martin married in 1839, taking Emeline to a Louisiana plantation where she would eventually have two children of her own, James and William. In 1846, Emeline and her two sons were sold to planter Jesse P. Bolls in Houston, Texas. In an incredible twist of history, Emeline secured the services of powerful Houston lawyer Peter Gray, who successfully sued Bolls for Emeline and her sons' freedom. Gray interviewed witnesses in Pennsylvania, Nashville and Louisiana, including Emeline's sister Lucy, and Washington Jackson himself. The case went to trial on November 24, 1848 and on the 25th the jury returned a verdict in Emeline's favor, deciding she and her sons were free and awarding her one dollar in damages.

Editor's Notes:

The slaveholder of "Mary," Francis Sorrel, is one of Savannah's most infamous slaveholders. Sorrell was born in Haiti in 1793 to a French citizen and free Black woman. At the age of 5, Black revolutionaries attacked the sugar plantation in Saint-Domingue where he lived, but he was protected by the enslaved caretakers who spirited him to relatives in Port-Au-Prince. At age 14 he worked as a merchant clerk in Port-Au-Prince and his company sent him to work at their Baltimore office. There, he and his supervisor, Henry Douglass, made plans for thier own company, Douglass and Sorrell, in Savannah, trading in cotton, molasses, butter, salt and slaves.

Sorrel's first wife, Lucinda, died in 1827 of Yellow Fever. He married her sister, Matilda, who committed suicide in 1859 by jumping from an upper story window, after discoving Francis was regularly raping the young slave Molly. The enslaved Molly herself committed suicide shortly thereafter. As a result, the Sorrel-Weed house in Savannah is famous, not only for it's history, but for supposed hauntings by the ghosts of Sorrel's former wives and the enslaved Molly.

Records from other ports show what Sorrel frequently travled with either the young slave Molly, or as noted above, Mary. It is possible that the enslaved Mary, above, is the same slave Molly from the stories, since Molly is a common diminutive name for Mary.

The slaveholder of the enslaved Israel Shelly, "E Podelford," is Edward Nathaniel Padelford, 1799-1870, a prominent Savannah merchant, being a partner in several highly successful trading companies. Padelford was also prominent in banking and insurance circles. (Source: https://wiseguystours.com/edward-padleford/)
